Artificial intelligence–driven innovations in periodontology: Emerging clinical applications
Artificial intelligence (AI) is redefining contemporary periodontology by enabling data-driven, precision-based approaches to diagnosis, treatment planning, and prognostic assessment. As periodontal diseases exhibit complex interactions between microbial, host, and systemic factors, conventional diagnostic methods may be insufficient to fully capture disease heterogeneity. This Presentation highlights recent innovations in AI and examines their expanding role in advancing periodontal care beyond traditional clinical paradigms.
Emerging AI technologies, particularly deep learning–based models, have demonstrated high accuracy in automated interpretation of periodontal radiographs and three-dimensional imaging, allowing objective quantification of alveolar bone loss and disease staging. Innovative applications include AI-assisted prediction of disease progression, tooth loss risk assessment, and stratification of patients based on individualized risk profiles. Integration of multimodal datasets—combining clinical findings, imaging data, and systemic health parameters—has enabled the development of intelligent clinical decision-support systems aimed at personalized periodontal therapy.
AI-driven tools are also being explored in periodontal maintenance through real-time monitoring, outcome prediction, and adaptive treatment modification, potentially improving long-term disease control and patient compliance. Despite these advancements, challenges related to algorithm transparency, external validation, data security, and ethical implementation must be addressed prior to widespread clinical integration.
